How to Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets with Paint Chalk

Chalk paint is one of the marvels of paint that will give you an ambiance that is as rustic as it is scenic. That is the reason why you need to know all the things that you can do with this paint. Annie Sloan is the pioneer who invented and copyrighted the name chalk Paint.

Now, the thing about this paint is that it is designed to make whatever you paint it with look rustic and antique. That is something that you will not find with the regular paints. It is the reason why I decided to try this out on my kitchen cabinets.

Now that was a wise decision, I can tell you that much. However, just like anything that you know, you will find that it has its pros and cons.

I will share with you in a moment, the things that you need to know about this paint.

Why Is It So Popular?

Well, as may have discovered, the paint is one of the most talked about. It is all the rage right now and people are painting anything that they have with it left, right and center. There is a reason for that. I think it is because this paint sticks to anything even without primer.

It will take anything very easily. I have seen it used on wood, metal, matte plastic and surfaces that have been painted already.

Now, if you have ever painted anything with regular paint before, you can obviously remember the work. You have to have sanding, primer and a host of other things. With this one, you can do away with all that, you just need the chalk paint and a brush and you are good to go.

Here is What You Will Need for the Cabinet Painting Job

There is so much that you can do when you have the chalk paint and the kitchen cabinets will be an easy job. So, I will share with you, the process that I prefer to use when I want to do some work in the kitchen cabinet. This will show you how to start and how to get into it with ease.

Now, I can assure you that there is no reason why you cannot have the effect that you need for this one. That is the reason why you will have to make sure that you have started with collecting what you need.

So, let us get started:

Step 1- Gathering the Materials

This is step one in the process. You will need to start with collecting all the things that you need for the job. That will help you do what you need to do with ease. That is how you will be able to get through to the end without any mishaps. So, collect these:

  • Get the chalk paint (preferably Annie Sloan’s brand, because she invented this).
  • Get a paintbrush for the job (preferably a ‘2” Angle Purdy brush’ will be perfect for this one)
  • You will need some wax because of the fact that the kitchen cabinet is a high traffic area and it will need extra protection.
  • Wax brush; and yeah, it is a different thing from the paintbrush. It is primarily designed to be used with wax.
  • Get some soft rags that are damp. That is how you will be able to clean the kitchen cabinets.
  • Get some of that painter’s tape for the edges that you do not want to paint.
  • Get some gloves to protect the nails from the paint, not that it is toxic but it can get under the nails.
  • Newspapers or canvas to put down for the process.

As you can see, this is not that hard if you know what you need and you get it as soon as you start. These things will make the process easy for you so, get them all.

Step 2- Prepping the Area

When you have gathered all the things that you need, start by making the area where this will happen conducive. This will mean that you tape the newspapers on the floor where the kitchen cabinets are. This is for the paint that will drip or spray.

It will stick to the floor if not cleaned when wet and to prevent all that cleaning, just cover the floor and get started with the process already. You could paint outside if the cabinet can be moved but if it can’t, just stay inside with plenty of lights and start working.

Step 3- Prepping the kitchen Cabinets

The cabinets need to be cleaned first before you can start with the painting. That is why you will need to make sure that you have done this. The best way to do that is to wipe them down which is why I said that you needed some rags that are soft in the supplies part.

That is how you will be able to have a smooth clean surface that the paint will take to easily. Make sure that you wipe off all the gunk and grime. You can remove the hinges and put them in a bag for easy painting of the doors. Do not sand unless there is a patch with some roughness.

Step 4- Shake the Can

Just like bottled medicine is shaken, you will need to shake this to make sure that it is well mixed and that you will get the best out of all of it. This mixing and shaking will ensure that when you open it, it will have no unevenness that might affect the layers. This is important.

Or, you can open the can and use something clean like a spoon to stir it to a uniform mix. The spoon will be no problem, just rinse it while it is still wet and keep using it. You see, the paint is FDA approved for food contact. Annie Sloan made something that is natural.

Step 5- Paint Now

Painting-Cabinnet-with-Rust-Oleum-Chalked-PaintFrom what I have seen and done, you will need two coats. This is the kitchen cabinet that we are talking about and the place is so full of people coming in and going out. This means that you will need to make sure that the coat is thick because of how much touching goes on here.

The brush strokes in the first coat that are visible will disappear when you do the second one.

Applying Wax

Now that you have painted this one, you will need to make sure that you have done the last step without messing it up. As I said, the kitchen will need a lot more than just the paint because of all the activity that goes on in there.

The wax will need to be applied 24 hours after the paint job to make sure that you have given the paint enough time to dry up and be ready for the work to begin.

Here is how you will do the wax job.

  1. The Scoop

Now, you will start by scooping the wax onto the paper plate. That is how you will be able to apply it easily. Take the wax brush and use it to start the application of wax. What you need to do is really get the wax into it but not too much.

This is very much like applying makeup especially the foundation and highlights. Light application of the wax will make sure that heat will not easily disfigure the cabinet.

  1. The Style of Application

There is an art to the application of wax. You will need to work it into the grain of the paint. As you do this, you will see the color brighten up more and more. As you continue, the parts you have applied wax on will get better and better-looking.

Now, you will need to do some wax on, wax off thing. Remember that soft rag I mentioned? Get a clean one and use it to rub parts that you have applied wax to and apply again and then take it off.

  1. Wipe

Even with the wiping as you apply wax, you will find that there is a residue that is left. The best thing to do is touch it with your fingers and see if there is any that comes off. If there is, keep wiping until this is not the case anymore.

As you wipe, it will get shinier and shinier. That is how you will know that you have done a good job. Now, wait for it to dry just like you did with the paint.

This is a simple process that you need to get into with no fear that you will mess up. With the brush that is suitable and paints from Annie Sloan, you will be able to nail it. There is so much that you will learn from this and it is beautiful what you get at the end.

There is a beautiful effect to be gained from this and you will find that to be the gift that keeps on giving.
